Philosophy

Lachlan's teaching is an amalgam of his studies with current and former members of the New York Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as his doctoral (and continuing) research into string pedagogy, Alexander Technique, and performance psychology. Students are shown concepts and given the tools to discover the ways of playing that work best for their individual needs. Questions and discussion are encouraged, as are processes for maximising efficiency of practice. Further insights into Lachlan’s approach are offered here

Background

Lachlan has taught cellists of all levels and ages, from beginners through to University students. He has successfully prepared students for entrance into university music courses, as well as teaching many students who want to play for pleasure. He has taught cello at Monash University, at a number of primary and secondary schools including Wesley College and Scotch College, and for Melbourne Youth Music. Additionally, he has taught as a guest artist at Universiti Tecknologi MARA in Malaysia, and as a Faculty Member of the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho, in Brazil. Lachlan has successfully prepared students for Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations, and a number of his students have received music scholarships to private schools. Lachlan’s pedagogical work has been published by the American Teachers String Association (ASTA). Lachlan holds a current Working With Children check (WWC), and is a member of the Victorian Music Teachers Association (VMTA).

Testimonials and Feedback

“Thanks so much for your lessons this year, I've learnt more about how to play the cello in these last 6 months than I did in the 4 years before that!” “Thank you Lachlan for an inspiring lesson. [My daughter] is thrilled!” “I just wanted to say thank you for all your help – I've found it extremely useful and can already feel a difference in my own playing.” “I have had the good fortune to sit in on the lessons and learnt a great deal to inspire and inform my own teaching. Lachlan is truly a Cello ‘nerd’ who is a dedicated and hard working teacher of the highest professional standard.” “I was very happy with how much I remember from our tutorials and how much I applied on the day. I knew I could play it a little better but I felt so in control and confident which was such a good feeling.” “Sitting in on lessons has been an inspiration for my own teaching. Thank you for all you have done with [my son], for your infinite patience and most of all for the amazing technical base you have given him over these few months.” “Thank you for the last year.  You certainly took [my daughter] to a new level of playing and overall awareness.”
